The Walls: works on paper by Laura Williams 3/02/10 to 14/02/10

The Walls is an exhibition of works on paper exploring the dialogue between one side of a garden wall and the other. The idea was inspired by a trip to Japan with much time spent wandering around gardens, admiring the large stone walls bordering and dividing the grounds.

While the entire gardens were beautiful, the presence of the walls that divided them created this neverending sense of anticipation to get to the other side. Even if what actually existed there was not particularly interesting, the inkling of what may have existed there was. The overhanging trees, cracks in the mortar or a vine climbing over provided enough clues for the imagination to take over.

After receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Western Australia in 2006, Laura has been exhibiting in a range of events in and around Perth including Hatched 07, the Clothespeg Projects 1-3, the National Youth Week Exhibition & Mentorship 2009 and the 2009 Melville Art Awards where she was awarded the Mixed Media Prize. This exhibition at Free Range Galleries is the first solo exhibition of her work.
