WAM SONG OF THE YEAR 2009 NOMINEES ANNOUNCED 25/09/09

80 nominees across 16 categories have been chosen from well over a thousand entries in the 2009 WAM Song Of The Year.

From today music fans can listen to all of the nominees, find out about the songwriters, and vote for their favourite in each category on perthnow.com.au. Or, it’s just a great chance to check out the latest up and coming local, Western Australian music.

The nominees are a wonderful mix of the who’s who of emerging and established local acts alongside a whole array of newcomers – the list includes Abbe May (Hoodoo You Do), Black Board Minds (I’m Not Scared), Jade Masters – Yabu Band (Healing Our Culture), Johannes Leubbers (Eternity), Sneaky Weasel Gang (Visionary), The Preytells (Lord Hold My Hand) Felicity Groom (2722.66km) and Sugar Army (Acute).

The song which receives the most votes overall will win $1000 cash, donated by perthnow.com.au The winner of this, all of the category winners and of course the Grand Prize of the WAM Song Of The Year will be announced at a special Presentation Ceremony at the Fly By Night Musicians’ club on October 8, to be hosted by Johnny Young.

Tickets for the Song Of The Year Presentation are available from WAM or from the venue, and are $20 / $15 concession (plus booking fee from the venue) or $25 on the door if available.

Judging took place over three weeks during September, with 57 independent judges involved in separate panels for each category. Judging of the Grand Prize winner, selected from the winners in each category, will take place this week.

WAM Song Of The Year is presented in partnership with The Department of Health WA, Mental Health Division to raise awareness of the benefits of creative activities such as songwriting to people’s mental health. The Grand Prize and Mentally Healthy category winners will be presented with their prize by the Minister for Mental Health, Dr Graham Jacobs MLA.

The message for WAM Song Of The Year 2009 is “Creating a Mentally Healthy Community”.
