ARTability: How to make your arts more accessible

Junction 2010

At the end of August this year, Propel’s Lisa Wallace and Lex Randolph packed their wollies and headed south-east to Tassie for “Junction” – a bi-yearly conference lead by Regional Arts Australia.

Along with a conference packed full of informative and inspiring projects, case-studies and research, Launceston came alive with Arts! There were shows, street performers, the Junc Room (an old circus tent with live music), caravans filled with laughter, knit graffiti and paste-ups along every street…

Lex spent a few days at The Studio, an old building attached to the Launceston Arts precinct, taken over for the Street Alive Youth Arts Festival team. They had been working with young people from all over Launceston to transform the cityscape. The focus of the art created was to show a positive image of young people and their reclaiming of public spaces.

You can see a few examples of the many performances and the various types of ‘graffiti’ in the images – Braille graffiti, paste-up, knit, traffic graphics, mandala walks. During the week, Lex was also lucky enough to host a class of school kids on an Art Trail, following the art through the streets of Launceston. Everyone created art as they went, learned to read Braille, stopped to see dance performances, and spotted literally hundreds of pieces of art around the city!

On the last day of the conference, Lisa and Lex, along with Kim Scheiders from the Streets Alive Festival team, presented a forum called ARTability: how to make your arts accessible. The forum included an open discussion with the audience about our experiences of working with young people with disabilities and exploring these topics:

  • How to include people in a real (not tokenistic) way
  • How to engage with, and get young people with disabilities involved in the arts, and;
  • How we were all faring on accessibility, as arts organisations.

Although Access and Inclusion were not key items on the conference agenda, we got positive feedback from people attending our session. It was great to see representatives from Disability Arts organisations form across the country attending the forum, and supporting more of a focus on access and inclusion in Arts sector. You can find out more about our presentation – and listen in!
