Program Reviews
Prop Fest 2009

Young writers, artists, and creative types came from all around Perth in mid October 2009 to participate in a program that is the first of its kind in Perth, Prop Fest – a free community-based filmmaking workshop for young people.

- Museum Tour, Oct 9 2009
Participants went on a day tour to some of the best museums and galleries in Perth.
From speaking with curators at the Museum of Performing Arts and PICA, to climbing into a Submarine at Fremantle Maritime Museum, participants explored creative themes and gained inspiration from the unique showcases and sometimes forgotten aspects of WA.
“I would never have visited the museums if not for Prop Fest, and I am glad I did as there is so much to see at the museums and some of the art exhibitions were really inspiring!” Adriana Montiel
- Workshop, Oct 13 – 16 2009
With no previous experience required, 11 local aspiring filmmakers aged 16 to 26 were given expert guidance on how to create a short film.
Run by the crew from The Hero Project, the workshop required a good deal of focus and energy as participants gained hands-on experience in shooting, scripting, and editing.
The participants had fun brainstorming for ideas, and decided the theme be on arts and culture. Openly sharing their views and opinions, the group came up with some great ideas for the film.
“The best part of Prop Fest was the chance to work with people you don’t know, and somehow we all mashed really well in four days! And everyone’s got some amazing skills to share – you couldn’t have picked a better team.” Lyndon Fernandez
At the end of the day, stories were pitched, ideas shared, numbers exchanged, and more importantly, friendships were forged.
The workshop was a great success with positive feedback from participants.
“I really enjoyed Prop Fest! Meeting some awesome people and being a part of the crew was great. Most of all, it left me feeling inspired in pursuing my interests in the arts.” Andi Ng
“I came away realizing that there are issues that I care about and want to explore, and stories I want to tell. I learnt that the point isn’t necessarily to walk away from something that isn’t working, but to identify what is not working and take the necessary measures. Thank you Propel for such a wonderful workshop!” Marisa Santosa
