In 2008, the NYW Launch was a dynamic, fun-filled affair. The main attractions were split up into the four areas of interest: Shout, Share, Live & Unite. This allowed people from all arts and cultural backgrounds to have a voice in this youthful celebration. For the first time the National Youth Week Launch brought together many different youth organisations to collaborate on one event.
Approximately two hundred patrons sat inside the PICA performance space during the official opening and performances. Approximately one hundred additional patrons viewed the visual art installations in the 90 minutes it remained open after the official opening.
Inside the performance space, EmCee Laura Miller from RTRfm ran the official launch. The Welcome to Country was performed by Janet Hayden, a Noongar elder and was followed by contemporary Aboriginal dance from Justina Truscott, who also performed at the 2007 launch. Speeches were given by Sonja Basic, the General Manager of Propel Youth Arts WA and the Honourable Ljiljanna Ravlich, MLA Minister for Youth.
Performers included: Exodus Musica – a Sudanese refugee group, the UNIMA puppet caravan, Magnetic Dance Hip Hop, the John Does, the Flairz, TJ Power, and the Sambanistas.
