WHAT IS KICKSTARTISTS?
KickstARTISTS is an exhibition opportunity for young WA-based artists to exhibit and sell their works commission-free. This year, KickstARTISTS is expanding to include an artist mentorship program, with the exhibition curated by early career artist Olivia Tartaglia and emerging artist Aisyah Cooper.
The 2017 KickstARTISTS Exhibition is entitled Symbiosis and will spotlight 8 pairs of artists, each consisting of an early-career artist mentor and an emerging artist mentee, who together will create a work addressing the 2017 KickstART Festival theme of eco-futures.
Propel will take no commission on any works sold during the exhibition, as prospective bidders will be encouraged to deal directly with the artists, so this is a chance for young learn through practice how to sustain your art career.
KickstARTISTS: Symbiosis will open at the new City Art Space in the Northbridge Piazza at 5.00pm on Monday 17 April, and the exhibition will run until Sunday 23 April 2017. Like all KickstART Festival events, entry is free.
There will be no commission taken on works sold. All proceeds from sales will be given back to mentees and mentors.
ABOUT THE KICKSTART FESTIVAL
The KickstART Festival – presented by Propel Youth Arts WA and the Department of Local Government and Communities in celebration of National Youth Week WA – is a free annual program of workshops, forums, exhibitions, performances, and special events for young creative people in Western Australia. In 2017, the KickstART Festival will be held from 31 March until 23 April.
THE MENTEE ROLE
The program is an opportunity for a young artist to work alongside a more established mentor, in the creation of an artwork for public display. Mentees will be assisted in devising, producing and promoting a small body of work for the exhibition. Leading up to the exhibition, Mentors and mentees are required to meet frequently and provide progress updates and assistance wherever necessary.
Mentors are encouraged to assist mentees in creating work that has the potential to be sold or submitted as work in other exhibitions, programs or competitions after the exhibition. A variety of mediums are welcomed, however we encourage the mentor and mentee to consider the appropriate medium for the exhibition based on the skill and capacity of each mentee and the support the mentor can provide in their production.
Propel also encourages all participants to keep in mind the exhibition theme and how the chosen medium would address eco-futures.
