What is it?

Hidden Movements is a creative development program, where up to 5 young dancers from all disciplines will work under the guidance of local dance artist Bernadette Lewis, to develop their skills in choreography, improvisation, and take their own individual artistic practices to the stage in a solo public showings at the State Theatre Centre of Western Australia during the Youth Week WA KickstART Festival.

The Youth Week WA KickstART Festival 2018 is presented by Propel Youth Arts WA, and is funded by the State Government of Western Australia. The KickstART Festival is also supported by Lotterywest and the Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority.

Dance and Improvisation

Project mentor Bernadette Lewis will lead two, group information, discussion, and workshop sessions prior to the rehearsal period. During these, participants will take time to discuss, share, and document their ideas. Process and development skills will be fostered through group discussion and practical tasks. We will also focus on performance and choreographic / improvisational skills such as presence, staging, sound, and design. These sessions will allow participants to prepare for the week of rehearsals and performance.

Although the rehearsals will be guided by Bernadette, participants can work as independently as they wish. Basic sound and other technical elements will be available, along with assistance, for the performances.

Emphasis will be placed on individuals’ creative development and so participants will be able to work one on one with the mentor throughout the program. Hidden Movements aims to nurture the seedlings of ideas and encourage creative process and development rather than generating a polished, final outcome. We envisage the performances from this program as vehicles for creative learning, momentum and to foster an attitude of consistent artistic creation and sharing.
