Speakers: Shaun Nannup and Alanna Kursar
Join Uncle Shaun Nannup and Marine Science Masters student Alanna Kursar speaking about Ocean Stories. Drawing on Indigenous knowledge, relationships between us, the water, animals and the environment, you will be guided through an introduction of the ocean and why it is so important.
Aware of the value this marine environment holds for us, and what is being lost, it is increasingly important to unite traditional ecological knowledge and create emotional connection to what lays below.
Moonboorli (Beyond) takes place on Whadjuk Country, the ancestral lands of the Noongar nation. Propel Youth Arts WA acknowledges the traditional owners of Country throughout Western Australia and their continuing connection to land and culture. We pay our respects to Elders past, present and future.
When: Saturday 10 August, 3.30 - 5pm
Where: Library Theatre, State Library of WA
About the speakers
Shaun Nannup is a Noongar leader who describes himself as a human being, an Indigenous man and a father. His purpose in life is to connect people through his stories. Shaun understands the impacts of trans generational trauma on Indigenous people, because he has experienced it deeply himself. By healing this trauma, he has been able to connect deeply with the Earth and live his life’s purpose with freedom and dignity.
Alanna Kursar is a marine scientist interested in how marine ecology and biology are responding to a changing world. Alanna has spent thousands of hours in the ocean, pulling her towards connection and conservation of these local waters.
About Moonboorli (Beyond)
Presented by Propel Youth Arts WA, Moonboorli (Beyond) is a new youth-focused program of free events celebrating science through culture, ideas, knowledge and storytelling, taking place at the State Library of WA on Saturday 10 August.
Get involved and experience science in creative and unexpected ways through a day-long program of presentations, workshops, performances, installations, activities, and showcases of the latest scientific developments. This is your chance to meet people who can change the world and learn how you can make an impact of your own.
We respectfully acknowledge the contributions of Dr Noel Nannup, Madjital Moorna, and Koondarm, to the development of the name and theme for this event. We are grateful for the knowledge we have gained by consulting with these groups and Elders.
Moonboorli (Beyond) is a National Science Week WA Co-ordinating Committee initiative and is supported by the Australian Government through Inspiring Australia as part of National Science Week.
National Science Week is Australia’s annual celebration of science and technology, and an opportunity to meet scientists, discuss the hot topics, do science and celebrate its cultural and economic impact on society. National Science Week 2019 will run from 10-18 August. Find out more at scienceweek.net.au.
